"Michael Boulware started his rookie season by playing linebacker in the nickel, then finished it in a dual role by also starting at strong safety in the base defense. What defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes has to decide this season is whether to just leave Boulware at strong safety, or continue to have last year's second-round draft choice split time between strong safety and linebacker in the nickel. Playing into the decision is the fact that each of Boulware's interceptions as a rookie came while playing linebacker, and four of them either won or iced games. The most obvious change in Boulware's game this spring has been his comfort level while playing safety. Gone are the false steps that cost him some completions last year, and they are replaced by an improved ability to read plays earlier and make more plays on balls thrown against him."
